Which Beans Make You Fart the Most?


Beans taste great and and are filling and can be part of a nutritious and healthy diet.  However they can have some *ahem* interesting side effects.

Why do beans make you fart?

You know the song “Beans beans good for your heart the more you eat the more you…”.  While it’s true that beans can cause you to fart, some are more gas inducing than others.  That’s because beans (legumes) contain a sugar that is hard for humans to digest.

Not all beans are creating equal when it comes to producing gas.  The beans on this list are the worst offenders!

Soybeans

Soybeans aka edamame are the most gas inducing beans on the planet!  Just ask a vegan.  I can also attest to this.  I recently ate a bowl of shelled and salted edamame and I thought I would never stop farting!  In general soy related products have been found to increase flatulence.

Soybeans are loaded with fiber prebiotics that feed gut bacteria which all lead to excess gas.  Don’t let the farty side effect scare you away from soybeans/edamame as they are chock full of benefits.  Thee include:

  • May reduce cholesterol
  • High in protein
  • Vitamin and mineral rich (Folate, Manganese, K)



Black Beans

Black beans are incredibly tasty and are my favorite type of bean.  In fact I eat them several times a week.  But be warned, black beans are some of the most gassy beans on the planet.  After eating a can for dinner I’ve woken up in the morning letting out a 10 second fart!

Black beans are highly nutritious.  Half a cup has 64% of your daily fiber and 44% of your daily protein (22 grams). They are also high in potassium and iron.

Kidney Beans

Thanks to their extremely high fiber content kidney beans can cause you to fart up a storm.  One cup has 184% of your daily fiber allowance.

This high fiber content can help relieve constipation if that is an issue for you.  They are also high in protein and go good with chili!

Chickpeas

Chickpeas aka garbanzo beans which are the primary ingredient found in humus are notorious for making you fart. They can make you bloated and are high in fiber.  I cup equates to 140% of your daily fiber allowance.  The good news is that besides the farting they cause chickpeas are one of the most healthiest super foods you can eat.

They are off antioxidants and can help regulate blood sugar.  They also taste really good with salt and pepper. Since they have so much fiber they will help you feel full which can help reduce your overall calorie intake.



Pinto Beans

When you think beans and farting pinto beans are probably the first to come to mind.  That is for good reason.  Who hasn’t eaten a side of pinto beans and then found themselves gassing out friends and family a few hours later?

This common bean tastes good in a variety of dishes or refried.  High in fiber and low in fat and cholesterol they are a tasty and healthy side dish if prepared properly. The sugar oligosaccharide is a sugar that humans cannot fully breakdown which leads to the excessive gas.
