Does Farting Burn Calories?

Ripping a huge fart can definitely make you feel lighter especially if your bloated or uncomfortably gassy. Back in November 2015, if you searched “does farting burn calories” in Google you would have seen this search result:

fart burn calories

Google sourced this information from a Facebook page called “F A C T” however this is clearly fake news.  A single fart burning 67 calories is the same number of calories you would burn by walking for 15 minutes or doing burpies for 6 minutes. So this is just a bad urban myth.

Sorry to burst your bubble but farting does not burn any calories according to Spencer Nadolsky, D.O., diplomat of the American Board of Obesity Medicine and author of The Fat Loss Prescription.

The average person farts up to 20 times a day which would be equal to burning 1,340 calories which would equal a pound every couple of days.  If this were true there would be alot more skinny people walking around.  Just imagine, if you could burn calories by farting you would just need to drink milk if you were lactose intolerant or eat a couple of dried apricots. (Heck if you could lose weigh by farting I would have lost five pounds after I ate half a bag of these dried delicious troublemakers)!

Also the sound doesn’t make a difference in the amount of calories burned.  Loud or silent, it doesn’t matter…. farts won’t burn any calories.

Your muscles don’t have to do much work when you fart.  They relax and the gas passes due to the pressure. Think about how many times you’ve farted at the worst moment possible just because it slipped out when your weren’t being careful.  Even if you farted as hard and as violently as possible (while you might poop your pants) you won’t burn calories.

Sorry….guess you’ll have to join the gym if you want to burn some calories!  Unfortunately you won’t be farting yourself thin any time soon.
